Set up a delayed replay camera for training
- Prop the phone where it can see the whole trick
A tripod is ideal, but a shoe, a water bottle or a gym bag works. Frame the full move including take-off and landing — a cropped landing tells you nothing about why you fell out of it. Film side-on for rotation and shape, front-on for twist direction and drift.
- Open the replay screen on a laptop
Open trickatlas.com/practice on the screen you want to watch — a laptop propped on the bench, a tablet, or a TV browser. It shows a QR code and a six-character room code.
- Scan the code with the phone
Point the phone's camera at the QR code and open the link. The phone becomes the camera and the laptop becomes the replay. Both devices should be on the same Wi-Fi.
- Set the delay to your walk-back time
The delay slider runs from 1 to 12 seconds. Set it to roughly how long it takes you to land and look at the screen — four seconds suits a standing trick, eight or more if you have a run-up to walk back from.
- Do the trick, then look at the screen
Don't rush it. Land, breathe, turn to the screen and your rep plays. Because it is on a loop-free delay you get one clean look at the attempt while the feeling of it is still fresh — that pairing of feel and footage is the part that actually changes the next rep.
- Save the ones worth keeping
Hit save and the last 5, 8, 12 or 20 seconds you just watched are written to a video file on that device. Keep the ones that show a fix working, not just the ones that look good.
Why delay beats recording and rewatching
You can film yourself with any phone. The problem is the gap: you do the trick, walk to the phone, unlock it, scrub back, watch, put it down, walk back. That is thirty seconds of admin per rep, and it breaks the session into stop-start chunks. Most people give up after four attempts and go back to guessing.
A delayed replay removes the walk entirely. The footage comes to you, on the screen you are already facing, at the moment you are already looking up. The cost per rep drops to zero, so you actually keep doing it — and seeing twenty attempts is what makes the pattern obvious.
There's a second, subtler reason. Watching a rep four seconds after landing it means the proprioceptive memory is still live. You can match "that felt early" to a picture of yourself opening early. Watch the same clip an hour later and it is just a video of a stranger.
What to actually look for
A replay only helps if you know what you are checking. Pick one thing per set, not five. Take-off angle: are you travelling backwards when you meant to go up? Shape: is the tuck actually closed, or is it the loose ball that feels closed? Timing: when do you open — before the rotation is done, or after you have already passed the landing?
Set-and-check beats browsing. Decide the fix before the rep ("arms stay up longer"), do the rep, and use the replay to answer that one yes/no question. This is far more useful than watching each attempt and vaguely thinking it looked bad.
If a trick is not landing at all, the replay usually shows the problem is one step earlier in the progression, not in the trick itself. That is what the learning routes are for.
Camera placement, briefly
Side-on, lens at roughly hip height, far enough back to keep the whole flight in frame. Waist-height matters more than people expect — filming down from a bench flattens the rotation and makes every backflip look under-rotated.
Shoot into the light, not with it behind your subject, or you get a silhouette that hides shape entirely. If you are on a trampoline, place the phone outside the frame's bounce path; a phone under the springs films the underside of the bed and nothing else.
Nothing is uploaded
Practice mode is peer-to-peer. The video goes from the phone straight to the laptop over WebRTC — the server only passes the two devices each other's connection details so they can find one another, and never sees a frame. Saved clips are written by the browser directly to the device you are watching on.
That means there is no account, no upload, no storage, and nothing to delete afterwards. It also means the footage is only ever as private as the room you are standing in, which is the point: filming minors in a gym is a real safeguarding question, and the safest answer is video that never leaves the two devices.
Questions
- Do I need to install an app?
- No. Both devices use the browser. The phone opens a link, the laptop opens a page — there is nothing to install and no account to make.
- Why do both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi?
- The two devices connect directly to each other. TrickAtlas doesn't run a relay server that video could be bounced through, so the phone and the screen need a network path between them — the same Wi-Fi is the easy way to guarantee that. Gym guest Wi-Fi that isolates clients from each other can block it; a phone hotspot with the laptop joined to it works as a fallback.
- Is my video uploaded or stored anywhere?
- No. Video travels phone-to-screen and is never sent to the server. Clips are recorded and saved in your browser, onto the device you are watching on. Nothing is stored server-side, so there is nothing to delete.
- How long can the delay be?
- Between 1 and 12 seconds. Four is a good default for standing tricks; use more if you have a run-up to walk back from.
- Can I save the clips?
- Yes. You can save the last 5, 8, 12 or 20 seconds at any time, and the file downloads to the device you are watching on.
- Does it work on an iPhone?
- Yes — the phone side works in Safari on iOS, and the replay screen works in Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Chrome and Edge use a slightly more efficient video path, but the replay itself is the same.
- How many people can join a room?
- Two — one camera and one screen. Room codes are throwaway: a new one is generated each time you open the page, and rooms are discarded after 30 minutes.
- Can I use a second phone as the replay screen?
- Yes. Any device with a browser can be the screen — a second phone, a tablet, or a TV browser. Bigger is better, since you're reading it from across the gym.
