180 Dive Roll

2 · Noviceparkour🌱 Grass

The 180 dive roll adds a half twist to the dive roll: the jump starts facing one direction, the body turns 180 in the air, and the roll finishes facing back where it began. The counterintuitive part is the shoulder choice β€” turning left means rolling over the right shoulder, since that is the shoulder the twisting momentum carries onto the ground. Shoulders and hips rotate together through the reach; leading with the shoulders and leaving the hips behind is the fault coaches call out most. Drilled on grass or another forgiving surface, it builds from a squat, reaching over and rolling out, then adds height by standing and jumping into the twist, keeping the arms muscled rather than stiff or limp so the roll stays smooth. It is worth learning on both sides.

Key cues

  1. Kick and reach up to gain height into the twist
  2. Rotate shoulders and hips together
  3. Roll over the shoulder opposite the twist direction
  4. Plant both hands in the dive roll position
  5. Keep the arms strong but bending to absorb
